Certainly not the most politically correct song, but such fun to listen to.

I’m dreaming of a white Thanksgiving
November 18, 2007As we shop for the turkey, pick through Clementines, look at shelled nuts, the familiar tunes are coming out of speakers everywhere. I’m not ready. Few of us are, as we contemplate the big dinner ahead, is there enough of this, is there room for that, are we brining or not.
Maybe it’s because there are so few Thanksgiving-type songs.
the dental soundtrack once again
November 16, 2007At 8:00 a.m. I had to endure Willie Nelson’s On the Road Again, Elvis and You Ain’t Nothin’ But a Hound Dog’ and Bob Seger singing Against the Wind. All fine songs, but after the procedures, I had a frank talk with the dentist, having heard through the nitrous fog her mutterings about the receptionist’s choice of music. The only categories she ruled out were classical (too sleepy) and heavy metal.
Perhaps there’s an office or two somewhere that actually offers metal, but not around here.
For my next encounter with the high-pitched instruments and whatnot, I’m packing my own music.
listening to Jaco Pastorius
Jaco Pastorius playing Portrait of Tracy with Weather Report.
A version of the song is in the album The Essential Jaco Pastorius. I wonder what he’d be doing if he had gotten treatment for his condition, and lived.
the hang drum
November 12, 2007If everyone had one of these, world peace might be achieved.
That is, world peace accompanied by mellow, gamelan-like sounds.
sigur ros: ballet shoe percussion and the cello bow
November 8, 2007An in-depth interview from the Observer, covering the shoes, how the cello bow was first applied to the guitar, the fans (Gillian Anderson listens during yoga, Gwyneth Paltrow during childbirth), Icelandic culture, their film, Heima, and their CD sleeve innovation.
Many thanks to Craig McLean, author of the article, for sending me scurrying to look up ‘thorablot’, a word surely to stun my Scrabulous opponents, but might not be in their dictionary. Ah, rotten foods of the world!
dental office music
November 6, 2007I’ve got to do something about their music choices (all oldies), but am not sure how to approach this. Yesterday I had to endure Lollipop, folk singers too fond of falsetto and a multitude of other awful songs.
There being many more visits, this is a continuing story. I’m off to eat my mashed potatoes now.
roadkill that sings: !!! - Yadnus
November 1, 2007listening to Gustavo Santaolalla
I first heard Santaolalla through his stunning guitar music from Brokeback Mountain. Recently, I bought Iguazu, which has been featured in Babel, Deadwood, The Insider and a Vodafone commercial. It is found on the album Ronroco and the Babel soundtrack.
He did soundtracks for 21 Grams, Amores Perros and The Motorcycle Diaries, and wrote the Golden-Globe award-winning A Love That Will Never Grow Old, sung by Emmylou Harris on the Brokeback soundtrack.
Obviously, a lot of his work I haven’t heard.
Halloween and Murcof
A family member has set up his turntables on the lawn with a couple of laptops and a lot of Murcof. There’s been sporadic activity of the costumed variety, three or four witches (and one witch mom), a space guy, a magician, and six young ladies with gowns and at least one tiara. Two highschoolers were out collecting cans for charity, and got candy as well.
