sounds of a late December night

December 28, 2007

The Gustavo Santaolalla portions from the North Country soundtrack, the rain possibly turning to sleet, the music taking on a peculiar high-pitched keening in the distance that turns out, after removing my earbuds, to be a jet.

metallicus gravis, or severe auditory abuse

December 27, 2007

A scholarly discussion (with tongue firmly in cheek) published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. The site has a bit of a problem displaying text via Firefox on a Mac, your experience might be better.

food songs: the Epicurious list

December 22, 2007

Of the seven, I’ve only heard two. Cibo Matto’s White Pepper Ice Cream made the list.

Perhaps peppermint ice cream would be more in keeping with the season, but I’m always confused when a creamy, melty substance is mixed with hard, brittle bits.

music to wrap presents by: Tamacun

December 21, 2007

The wrapping goes a lot faster, trust me.

Normally, I go the traditional route. By the time the presents are all stacked up in their boxes, I want to slow down, but this year, I’m a bit behind. Still got some cards to get out. Still got a few things to get. The fridge is waiting for the turkey and the roast.

Most years, I get to do the wrapping by myself, but this time, curious family members are popping in and out of the room (wow, that’s a big box), so the faster the process, the better.

and a very merry Chewbacca to one and all

I bet you didn’t know he could sing so well. Something to listen to while you’re waiting for the office party to start.

food songs: Banana Fish

December 20, 2007

From Shonen Knife. It’s not a Christmas song, not sure if it’s about food either.

time to kick back: Nina Simone, Felix Da Housecat

December 19, 2007

Getting stressed out? More stuff on the list not bought yet? Really sick of that godawful music coming out of the mall speakers?

You could put this on, from the album Cained, a collection of Michael Caine’s favorite chill-out music. I was very surprised at his impeccable taste, which also includes Lustral, Chicane, Roy Budd and Craig Preuss.

The still untrimmed tree is upright now instead of leaning way to the side (needles already dropping), presents are sitting in their packing boxes unwrapped all over the house, but I’m mostly done with the shopping.

Still some packages to mail. Maybe I’ll just put this cd on ‘repeat’ today.

top bassists list

So who are the top 10. 20? 30? More, maybe.

food songs: The Chocolate Song

First of a series:

Uli Jon Roth

December 16, 2007

Formerly with The Scorpions, he became influenced by Jimi Hendrix. The Wikipedia entry calls his music ‘neo classical metal’, and discusses his custom instruments. Here is Roth playing Concerto D’Aranjuez:

listening to Rodrigo y Gabriela

One store featured Burl Ives, but thankfully the next store removed the ‘holly jolly Christmas’ looping through my head. However, it was playing spirituals sung badly. With unwrapped gifts piling up and umpteen more things to do (Christmas card? Shipping to Canada?), I also have to work today.

Made much more bearable with Diablo Rojo taken from their self-titled album. Their site is here.

For more on the duo, check out Chris’ input on his metal blog at ‘Musical Warfare’.

a little Handel

December 14, 2007

‘Tis the season, even if you aren’t a religious person. I’ll be sharing from my collection of Christmas music, which has more than a few Hallelejahs, Exultates and Glorias. Even if I’m not a particularly religious person. This version of For Unto Us a Child is Given is not my favorite, but is the only one I can find that you can hear instantly.

Feel free to jump in at any time. There’s a reason Sing-Along Messiahs are so popular.

Christmas music from Jewel

Last year about this time, I was looking over the 2006 holiday releases. The only one I liked was Joy - A Holiday Collection by Jewel.

Then my mother became very ill, and was hospitalized through Christmas. She died a few days after. As part of her funeral service music, I chose two songs from the album, Gloria and Ave Maria. Jewel’s mother, Nedra Carroll, duets with her on two songs in the CD. I’m not sure who sings with her on Gloria, since other women are credited as backup vocalists.

Since then, even through the summer, I have played Gloria and Ave Maria. Gradually, I could listen without thinking of the funeral, but always, I will think of my mother when I hear them.

Ludovico Einaudi: Monday

December 10, 2007

Perhaps it will make your Monday more pleasant.

the marching band drummers

December 4, 2007

For the past two hours, they’ve been going at it. Either the wind is blowing the sound my way or the guys are on the next street over. Must be practicing for the Festival of Lights parade.

listening to ‘River’

December 1, 2007

Many singers have covered the song, which is featured on Herbie Hancock’s latest album, ‘River: The Joni Letters’

So far, I only have the Linda Ronstadt version, which is on the morning playlist. It’s a working Saturday, and not too early for Christmas-related music.
